Forty­one percent of Spartanburg County fifth­graders are overweight or obese, according to recent data released by the Spartanburg Childhood Obesity Taskforce. Over the course of the 2012­2013 school year, task force members collaborated with staff in all seven Spartanburg County school districts to collect consistent body mass index data for 10,426 first­, third­, and fifth­graders.

Friday afternoon, a woman left a message at my office for me to call her, as she had something urgent to discuss with me. I was on my way to the Cherokee Education Liftoff for KNOW(2) when I got the message and called her. In a very excited voice she began telling me about how much the KNOW(2) initiative had meant to her son and his children.
